English Language Learners (ELL)

Sunset Ridge School District's student population includes many students with linguistically diverse backgrounds, with over 20 languages represented. The District's English Language Learning (ELL) program provides supplemental support to students who are not native English speakers.

Students for whom another language is identified on the Home Language Survey take a screener to assess for the level of English proficiency. Students that The program employs one certified ELL teacher and one teaching assistant.

Each January or February, English Language Learner (ELL) students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade participated in the administration of the ACCESS for ELLs® language proficiency test. ACCESS provides a standardized measurement of academic language proficiency for ELL students throughout the state of Illinois and in other states. Students who qualify for supplemental support receive additional instruction, either in class or outside of class individually or in small groups to target the identified areas of need in English language development.
